A New Look this Holiday Season at Gloria’s Beauty Salon
Gloria’s Beauty Salon, a Rocky Point fixture for over 40 years, is not getting a new look this holiday season, but is busy turning them out for the many men and women who want to look their best as they attend the many posadas and parties through the New Year. Men, women and children have been patronizing her beauty salon for over four decades (since 1969) and Gloria shows no sign of slowing down anytime soon. If anything, she is on the cutting edge of everything beauty. She has grown her one-chair salon into a multi-station beauty conglomerate that offers a full line of beauty related products and services. Not only does she run her incredibly successful salon (actually it is family run), but she has also created the go-to-beauty-school that has turned out hundreds and hundreds of stylists whose talents rise way beyond cutting hair. Even her daughter Chris is in on the action doing everything from nails to permanent make-up. Gloria, herself, has reached legendary status with her salon and fashion shows. She keeps on top of beauty trends whether it’s the latest must have “do” or the hottest new color. She is multi-talented, as is her staff, and every customer receives personal attention.
I have been going to Gloria’s Beauty Salon since I moved to Rocky Point in 1995 and have witnessed the transformation of her style as well as her business and school. Gloria was the only person that I let cut my hair way back then when it was down past my waist. I was opting for a very short style and I remember her asking me, multiple times, if I was sure s she cut inch by inch in case I changed my mind. She has made me a redhead, a brunette, a blonder-blonde and she has cut, streaked and styled my hair over many years. Now that I am older I just go in for some “rayos” (highlights) to cover up the gray (eeek) and a cut though she did cut many inches off recently and I am thinking about a fresh new short style…Thinking I said! When her daughter Chris first learned how to apply permanent make-up, my Mom, Sandra O’Hare, her friend Bev and I all went in for some tattooing. This had to be maybe 9 years ago. I had my upper lids tattooed with brown eyeliner and it lasted for many years. In fact, you can still see it, but I am thinking of returning for a new set of tattooed lids. It wasn’t the most pleasant experience – some pain and swelling, but not too bad and it sure beat having to apply eyeliner every day – money well spent in my opinion.
In addition to eyeliner, Gloria’s also offers permanent make-up on lips, under the eye, eyebrows and lip liner. It is the ultimate salon for men, women and children offering basic haircuts, styles and colors of your creation, shampoo and set or blow dry, perms, and hair extensions, which seem to be incredibly popular these days. Gloria’s also offers massage, pedicures and manicures as well as facials and waxing. And let’s not forget acrylic nails – full sets, fills and designs of your choosing or leave it up to them. I decided to get a full set of acrylic nails several months back and thought I would try out Gloria’s – I’ve never had my nails done there. So, I made an appointment with Chris and received the best set of nails I have had in awhile. Not only were they perfect, she was super fast which pleased me to no end. There are few things I loathe more than sitting for hours in a salon chair getting my nails done only to have to fix them when I get home. I live at Laguna Shores Resort so I timed the trip to see how long the whole process took. Wait for it…wait…wait…1½ hours from my front door to Gloria’s, full set of nails, and back to my door at Laguna Shores Resort. It took me 15 minutes to get to Gloria’s and 15 minutes to get back so my full set of nails took exactly 1 hour…and they were perfect. Absolutely perfect and she didn’t even make me bleed by sanding too much. I am due for a fill now and actually don’t dread making the appointment. It’s a luxury to have nice nails, but there’s only so much time I’m willing to give up to the nail chair. Want great nails, quick and perfect? ask for Chris – she does a fantastic job and can apply fancy holiday designs.
Gloria’s Beauty Salon carries name brand shampoo, conditioner and hair products from Paul Mitchell, Sebastian, Loreal and a variety of other well known companies – all high quality products. They are located at 101 Constitucion Ave., just one block south of Ley Supermarket. They are open Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM and on Saturday from 9:00 Am to 6:00 PM.
