January 2013 High and Low Tide Activities at Laguna Shores Resort

January 2013 High and Low Tide Activities at Laguna Shores Resort

If you have never read a tide chart for Rocky Point, Mexico here is a bit of a visual crash course. The days highlighted in yellow are the best high tide days and the rest of the days are low tide days – or lower than the best. Living here at Laguna Shores Resort Oceanfront Community we pay particular attention to the tides since our bay empties out at low tide and brushes the sand dunes at high tide. This basically means there are different activities we can enjoy all month long whether the tide is in or out.

HIGH TIDE:

On the calendar you will look for the peaks which are the tallest to the top of the square. The numbers on the side of the chart tell you how many feet and the bottom of each square tell you at what time the tide is highest and lowest and how many feet. So, for instance let’s take January 13th, 2013. The highest tide that day will be at 3:00 AM and it will be at 18.8 feet. (Now remember the tide comes in and out a few times a day and not at the same time.)

LOW TIDE:

Using that same square – January 13, 2013, the first low tide will be at 9:10 AM and it will be at 0.6 feet.

The next high tide on that day will be at 3:00 PM and will be 15.8 feet and the next low tide will be at 9:10 PM and will be at -1.8 feet. What all of this means is that if you want to kayak through the estuary here at Laguna Shores on Sunday, January 13, 2013 then you obviously don’t want to aim for the first high tide at 3:00 AM unless you love the early morning – rather you would shoot for 3:00 PM. This does not mean you cannot get your kayak into the water until 3 PM, it simply means that 3 PM is the high tide and the water will start receding from that time. Ideally you will want to be deep in the estuary by 3:00 PM so you have plenty of time to enjoy the scenery and get the kayak back to Laguna Shores Resort while the water is still fairly close to shore. It is somewhat of a science knowing how many feet is ideal for your activity. I would most likely drop my kayak in the water between 1:00 PM and 2:00 PM to have enough time to paddle all through the estuary and enjoy some ocean action on the way back.

Now as you look at the days that are not highlighted you can see that some tides are fairly flat, meaning the water does not go in or out much. And some days are extreme low tides such as Friday, January 25th, 2013 where the low tide will be at 7:00 PM at -0.8 feet. When tides are low like this it is a great time to go clamming or exploring the areas that are usually underwater. Summer is the best time to enjoy the low tide in the late evening as the sun has not yet set.

High Tide Activities at Laguna Shores Resort

• Beachcombing – high and extreme high tide tends to churn up the water and bring all kinds of new shells to the high tide line. Cruise the beach at the peak of high tide and when it starts to recede, it will leave even more treasures along various tide lines.

If you want to wade across the estuary you may be able to reach barnacle isle at the far end of Laguna Shores Resort. Be careful though as the water comes in fast and you don’t want to be swept away. You can usually get around the rocky point at the other end of the beach in front of Laguna Shores though at extreme high tide the water splashes right up against the sand cliffs. You don’t want to get caught so be sure to consult the tide chart and proceed with caution.

Here are some more high tide and low tide activities you can enjoy at Laguna Shores Resort – all in one location. No other master planned community in Rocky Point can claim this. Don’t believe me? Check it out for yourself. Many of these activities can be enjoyed at low tide as well.

If you want to spend the day, or a few hours away from the Resort, here are more ideas:

• Tour the Pinacate Visitor’s Center and/or the volcanic craters

• Walk around Old Port, grab a shrimp taco or cocktail and do some shopping (same goes for “Rodeo Drive” sans the shrimp – but great souvenirs and stuff you just can’t live without!)

• Fish, dive, parasail, or take a banana boat ride or go up in the ultra-lite plane

• Enjoy a few hours out at sea on a refreshing Sunset cruise (you’re sure to see dolphins)

• Visit a local Mercado (market) and pick up some avocados (really cheap), tomatoes, cilantro, onions, tomatoes and your own salsa and guacamole when you get back to your condo at Laguna Shores.

• Stop by the fish market and grab some “big blues” (shrimp) then head back to your condo to enjoy sunset and an ice cold beverage with your fresh shrimp and freshly handmade salsa and guacamole: a truly perfect Mexican evening.

• Day trip it to close cities like Caborca, Desemboque, Puerto Lobos and small towns in-between.

• Take a tour of Rocky Point and visit CEDO and see the fin whale skeleton and shop for great souvenirs in their gift shop. Visit the many galleries and stores around town for one-of-a-kind items and stop at one of the many restaurants and grab a bite to eat or try your luck at the casino inside the Black Dog.

You never have to look very far for something to do while you’re at Laguna Shores Resort, but if you want to go into town we are only a 10- to 15-minute drive to the heart of the city. Labor Day Weekend will be a great weekend to enjoy both high and low tide activities as we are moving into a full moon and have excellent high and low tides leaving plenty of time in-between to enjoy the beach, the isles, the estuary and everything in-between. Come and enjoy Laguna Shores Oceanfront Resort and discover “The Laguna Shores Advantage”.
