Meet the “Juancitos”: the Little Desert Guardians of Laguna Shores

Introduction

At Laguna Shores Resort in Puerto Peñasco, visitors often encounter a small rodent affectionately nicknamed “Juancito.” These charming animals are actually round-tailed ground squirrels (Xerospermophilus tereticaudus), native to the Sonoran Desert. With their big dark eyes and sandy fur, they peek from burrows or dart across open spaces, capturing attention.

Physical traits and behavior

These squirrels are small (20–28 cm long, ~125 grams), with sandy-gray fur and a long rounded tail. Their strong hind legs and digging claws make them ideal burrowers. Active in the morning and late afternoon, they are quick, cautious, and curious.

Habitat and desert life

They inhabit flat, sandy areas with shrubs like creosote and mesquite. Common across Sonora and the U.S. Southwest, they dig burrows for shelter. At Laguna Shores, they’re often seen near trails and open sandy spaces, especially early or late in the day. Interestingly, these squirrels can go into estivation during the hottest months, a sort of desert hibernation. They rarely need to drink water, getting almost all their hydration from moisture-rich plants in their diet.

Interaction and conservation

As seed dispersers and prey for predators, they play a key ecological role. Please observe them from a distance, avoid feeding, and keep the area clean to protect their natural behavior. When a Juancito senses danger, it may release a sharp chirping call to alert others. At that signal, nearby squirrels vanish into burrows while one or two peek cautiously from the entrance until it's safe to emerge.
