Eco Fun Bird Island Trip – Rocky Point

Eco Fun Bird Island Trip – Rocky Point

Eco Fun takes you on an unforgettable trip out to Bird Island where you can snorkel, swim or kayak amongst 3,000 sea lions

By Lannette Phipps

A few hours from Rocky Point, Mexico and miles from anywhere else there exists a chain of white-topped rocky crags that some may say look like Swiss Alps. In fact the area is nature’s playground for over 3,000 sea lions as well as numerous species of birds hence the “white toppings”. Though they are a chain of giant rocks they are referred to as Bird Island. And Bird Island is one of the best things to do while you are in Rocky Point, Mexico. It is like no other experience you have ever had unless perhaps you have traveled extensively – even then, it is pretty awesome.

We recently had family out from Canada and decided to take a trip out to Bird Island to they could witness Bird Island for themselves: snorkel with the sea lions, kayak around the island or just watch from the boat. I myself have been out to Bird Island many times, on many different vessels – large and small – and this time we decided to try Eco Fun since I had never been on the very large double-decker boat that also does sunset cruises as well as other sightseeing ventures around Rocky Point.

We boarded the boat very early in the morning – there was our family and another family of 4 staying at Laguna Shores Resort that we had befriended and who wanted to go out as well. The morning was beautiful and not terribly cold for March. We left from the port in Peñasco and stopped at the Mayan Palace where another 45 people boarded the boat and from there it was about an hour and a half out to the Island. There was plenty of room on the boat; bottom level tabled and chaired and shaded; and the top level there are bench seats, chaise lounges and plenty of sunshine. Being on a boat that big is great because there are many people with which to make acquaintance as was the case with our trip. I’m not sure what I expected, but I was very pleasantly surprised by Eco Fun’s staff, their coordination and ease and just general friendliness. They were very organized from serving lunch to getting everyone set up to kayak or snorkel and they even had a panga for those who didn’t want to get wet. The water was a bit cold, but the weather was warm so it wasn’t that big of a shock.

Everyone on Eco Fun had a great time and either got to kayak with the sea lions or snorkel with them or check them out via panga or from aboard the Eco Fun. After everyone was done having their fun all of the equipment was reeled in and put away – no tripping over life vests or fins – and we were on our way back to the Mayan Palace to drop off passengers. That is when the real party begins. The drinks were flowing for the entire trip, but on our way back the music was turned up, the tequila shooters came out and the video camera turned on to record the fun. It was a great trip and everyone had a wonderful time. It is the type of experience I would expect if I went to a larger tourist city like Cancun or Cabo San Lucas. They also handle large and private events.
