Looking for a few Guardian Angels
The Guardian Angels program was started many years ago by Linda and Guy Scholey, long-time residents and owners of The Old Port Galley Restaurant. The purpose of this program was to provide a present for each child who attended Escuela La Montaña, a school for handicapped children. Patrons and friends would choose a child’s name and purchase a present for that child. Santa would show up at a party held for the children and their families and presents would be opened. Over time Guardian Angels was so successful that Linda and Guy Scholey were able, not only to provide Christmas gifts to the children, but also a hot meal every day. This may not sound like much, but raising a child in Mexico can be a hardship for some let alone raising a child with special needs. Many families are not equipped emotionally or financially to care for a handicap child so this program, and Escuela La Montaña, make it a lot easier.
Escuela La Montaña schools children with emotional and physical handicaps and recognizes the right of every child to be loved and to develop to his/her fullest potential. This school for children with such handicaps, provides one stable, bright light that children can depend on every day of the school year for education, for companionship, for laughter, and most importantly, for love.
As luck would have it, Linda and Guy hired a chef named Ramon Ramos who many of you know from his many years at Old Port Galley and his own restaurants. He was the head chef at the Gallery for many years and when Linda and Guy decided to retire and close the restaurant, Ramon and his family opened up La Casa de Ramon and they continued the Guardian Angel tradition. Ramon Ramos now has two restaurants, his original one in town and the other at the Sonoran Sea. Both locations serve up fantastic dishes at great prices and he is one of the top chefs in Rocky Point, Mexico and a kind and generous person.
Ramon Ramos has kept Guardian Angels alive with your generous donations. Some choose one child to spoil at Christmastime while others adopt an entire family. Many of these children have siblings who may receive nothing or very little at Christmas so it’s always nice when the entire family can have a present to open. Ramon has also continued the hot meal program so each and every child receives nourishment every school day throughout the year. That may not sound so difficult, but add that to maintaining two very successful restaurants and all his other charitable work. Guardian Angels is a great cause and if you are interested, please stop by either location of La Cocina de Ramon – stay for breakfast, lunch or dinner and have a great meal.
