When you think of Rocky Point or Puerto Penasco, Mexico, molten lava or volcano does not really ring a bell, right? Well, you are in for a surprise. The remains of molten lava that had exploded in the Sonora desert can be seen all along the Puerto Penasco beaches! Four million years ago, volcanic eruptions occurred and the desert is covered by the remains of the black lava (now solidified into rocks).
Pinacate Biosphere Reserve attracts tourists from all over the world and it is also an archaeological site. The whole reserve area is breathtakingly beautiful and unique. It is like walking on the moon with craters, lava tubes and pumice soil right next to you.
It is a huge expanse of land, stretching over 600 square miles. It has some 400 cinder cones (formed by explosions and molten lava) and fine lava ash is scattered everywhere.
This volcano is “dormant” right now, which means no activity is going on inside the giant. But it is not dead. Tourists are advised to be safe, cautious and to strictly follow some rules. Also, when you drive there, please stop at the information center before entering the area to learn what guidelines need to be followed.
Do not forget to carry plenty of water with you – both for yourself and your car. There is no water available once you are inside the reserve. Be careful of poisonous animals and snakes like black widow spiders, rattlesnakes etc.
